The prophet Jeremiah continues to give the true message from God, not just the one the Jewish people who are in exile want to hear. The message from God is clear: that, despite their breaking of the Covenant and being sent into exile, they will return and be restored to their land. Through the words of God through the prophet Jeremiah, the covenant will be restoredand they will be the chosen people again. God does not forget His promises. This is good news for us Christians that the words of Jesus will come to pass.
In the Gospel the leaders of the Jewish people are all rapped up with the law, especially the law about the washing of hands before eating. Jesus' answer is simple: it is not that which goes into the body that is bad but that which comes out of the body: that is what we say to one another. He concludes with the analogy that they are like the blind leading the blind, "both will fall into a pit". So, let us be careful what we say to our sisters and brothers and avoid the pitfall.
