Scripture Reflection for Friday, June 18, 2021 (Readings: 2 Cor 11, 18, 21-30; Ps 34; Matthew 6: 19-23)
Jesus gives us two commandments: "Do not accumulate treasures on earth ... instead accumulate treasures in heaven". Enriching oneself is the aspiration of every person. We try to manifest power, pride, superiority, but in wealth we also seek security against dangers, including death, and of having satisfactions that economic well-being can give. Selfish search for material goods takes time and energy from the acquisition of heavenly goods and makes a person a slave to possessions and desires.
Everyone must have something or someone to give his attention and strength to. The problem is the choice of this treasure to attach the heart. Man becomes what he loves. If he loves things he becomes like things; if he loves God he becomes like God.The use of things is good until it becomes an obstacle to follow Christ and love the brothers. The Christian cannot be a slave to anything or anyone.
The evangelical saying of the lamp of the body presents us with the need for clarity in the orientation of life. The true light is Jesus. The good eye is the one that receives the light of Jesus' revelation; the bad eye, the one that rejects it. The eye that lets in this light immerses the whole person in light, the eye that does not let this light in immerses the person in darkness.
The eye is presented as the symbol of the heart, of the mind. The heart of man must be oriented to God and live in search of the treasures of heaven, If, on the other hand, he gets lost in the search for material goods, he becomes blind and his whole person is immersed in darkness.
In the Bible, the eye expresses a person's spiritual orientation. The good eye expresses the right relationship with God. The evil eye, the opposition of the spirit of man to God.Let us ask the Lord to give us a clear look, which recognizes the right path to reach the purpose of our life: to possess the treasure that is He, the true light of the eyes and joy of the heart. God bless,
