First Reading: Acts 14: 5-18
Psalm 115
Gospel: John 14: 21-26
Love for the person of Jesus is demonstrated by observing his precepts, that is by accepting the word of Christ, making it penetrate the heart and jealously guarding it. The true disciple, who shows that he loves the Lord concretely, will be the object of a special love of the Father and the Son. This love of Christ for his friends will result in a special manifestation (v.21).
Jesus clarifies that his manifestation to friends will not take place in a spectacular and external way, but will take place in the depths of consciences, with his meeting with the Father in the heart of the disciples (v.23). Indeed, the kingdom of Christ is not of a political nature, does not it originate from this world, but is established with the assimilation of truth (Jn 18, 36-37), observing his word (v.23). With this interiorization of the revelation of Christ, the disciples become the temple of God: they will host the people of the Father and the Son.
Jesus will truly manifest himself to his friends who love him concretely, because he will return to them and live forever in their hearts (v.20), together with the Father (v.23) and the Spirit of truth (v.17).
Jesus relates his revelation to the action of the Holy Spirit. By dwelling with his friends, he revealed the word of God (v.25), but they did not understand or let the truth penetrate the heart; hence the need for the intervention of the Holy Spirit. So not only Jesus, but also the Spirit is a teacher of faith: he will teach everything to believers. The Holy Spirit will not exercise a didactic function independently of the revelation of Jesus, but will remind the disciples of the words of Jesus (v. 26) and introduce them in all truth (Jn 16:13).
This is the first passage from the Gospel of John which speaks simultaneously of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three divine persons are not considered in an abstract way, but in their relationship with the disciples of Jesus. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit live in Christians who guard the word of the Lord (vv. 18.23). This truth must deeply inspire our spirituality.
May God indwell in our souls!
