This Gospel is about us because the blind person represents all humanity. Our blindness is lack of knowledge of God combined with the presumption of seeing ourselves. The Messiah was announced by the prophets as the one who gives sight to the blind and brings good news to the poor
The crowd around Jesus is an impediment to the blind man. The crowd's behavior is very significant. Instead of pitying the sick person and helping him, they are bothered by his cries. The blind man's pain and despair is less important than their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The problem of personal tranquility can make people forget, even hinder, good initiatives. The friends and disciples of Jesus, who were supposed to help the blind man, are the very ones who would like to silence him. Not only that, but they also scold him! However, Jesus invites the bind man to come to him. The sensitivity and freedom of Jesus stand out in every page of the Gospel, especially when compared with indifference and selfishness of people.
The blind man prays to Jesus calling him by name. In no other name is their salvation: it is to experience firsthand the gratuitous love of God who gives and forgives. Jesus is the revelation of this love of the Father.
The attitude of the blind man is in contrast with the dullness of the Jews. Jesus complains to the people because they do not believe if they have not seen and touched Him. The blind man does not need this. The apostle Thomas believes only after having seen and touched. But Jesus says to him: "Because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are those who, despite not having seen, will believe!" (Jn 20:29). This bliss seems to have been specially coined for the blind man of Jericho who sees more acutely than the sighted. For this faith Jesus heals him and saves him.
Obtaining the sight of faith allows us to follow Jesus who said: "Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”. At the end of the story all those present praise God with him. Praise, which makes us partakers of the good of others, is the highest expression of love.
