“Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called…”
We are in the mind of the Lord. God called us before the foundation of the world to be blameless and holy in His sight. All of us need to reflect the image imprinted in us from our maker, the Lord God. We owe God all of ourselves, our being and doing. This is what St Paul reminds the Ephesians to lead a life worthy of their calling. The worthy leading and living is the way to conduct our lives by reading the signs of our daily events that we are interested to know, whether it is the weather forecast or any other programs and projects we want to do each day. In a special way we need to be ready to acknowledge in humility our relation with our neighbors in a peaceful living and loving way. It is this everyday forgiveness of one another that prepares our hearts to be forgiven by the Lord. In other words, we must settle with him/her on the way, by a spirit of charity and forgiveness. Therefore, Jesus warns us to seek God’s mercy in time before it is late; for He said: “you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny”.
Every day, in every person we meet, in every member of our family, all over our neighborhood, God gives us opportunities to settle matters of justice and charity, so that we will be ready to meet our own judgement.
We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves. Are you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commitment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife and children, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by laboring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent or guardian? Be holy by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus. Are you in a position of authority? Be holy by working for the common good and renouncing personal gains. And so on and so forth. Jesus in this part of the Gospel wants to remind us, not to miss these chances to settle our spiritual affairs now, before we come to that final court.
