In the first reading, St Paul tells the Corinthians that when he came to them, he did so in a way that their faith might rest not in human wisdom but in the power of God. Because God is the source of every good thing.
Today’s Gospelpassage records accounts of Jesus's preaching in Nazareth and the reactions of his fellow townspeople. He said: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”. Jesus had already gained a reputation throughout the region of Galilee. So, they expected Him to do the same in His hometown. He did not perform miracles because they refused to believe in him saying “Is not this Joseph’s son?”Therefore, Jesus confronted them saying, “Truly I tell you; no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown”. He goes to tell them the story of the prophet Elijah, who escaping from the threat inflicted against him, was accepted by a widow in a foreign land. In the same way, in Elisha’s time as well, there were many lepers in Israel but Naaman, the Syrian officer, was the only one cured from his leprosy. Jesus’ fellow townspeople were pretentious and found it hard to accept what was done by Jesus. In the end, the synagogue people were very angry against Jesus and plotted to throw him off the cliff of the hill. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went on His way. Nothing is impossible for God.
You know, “truth” is like a double-edged sword. It may make you free and/or, hurt you badly. It depends on one’s openness and faith.
Prayer:Jesus, you were not accepted in your own town. So, let us not be upset if we are not always kindly received when we bring Your Good News. Amen. Blessings. Fr. Mussie
