Our first reading is from the first letter of St. John who speaks about God's love for us. God sent his only begotten Son, Jesus, to save us from our sin. He reminds us that God has called all the nations and He shows us the way to salvation. John was the last apostle to die, so the early Christians kept coming to him to hear the Good News and to hear from Him all the good things Jesus did and taught.
Our Responsorial Psalm reminds us that all nations are called to salvation. We are all called to adore God for what he has done for us.
In Mark's Gospel, we read of an early miracle Jesus performed by feeding the large crowd with just five loaves of bread and two fish. This is a sign of what he will do when he gives us the Eucharist. The left-over food that numbered twelve baskets of food is another sign of the twelve apostles who will feed and nourish the Church. If Jesus can do so much with so little, how much more can he do for us who believe. As we start the new year, let us renew our faith in God's love for us and what he will do for us in the new year.
