Jesus, as the Lion and the Lamb in today’s reading, is our King-Savior but also the humble servant who obeyed His Father’s will even unto death. In the reading from Revelation, John writes a vision he had regarding a scroll, sealed with seven seals which no one could open. Only Christ the Lion and the Lamb, can break open its seals. Today’s Gospel passage reminds us that Jesus is entering Jerusalem and crowds of disciples are praising God. The people loudly sing “Blessed is He who comes as a King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” However, as Jesus came near Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it saying: “If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.” He predicts the city’s destruction. In fact, in the year 70 A.D, the city was destroyed. Jesus knew what would befall the city because her inhabitants refused to use God’s grace. The people wouldn’t listen and rejected Christ, the true King of kings.
Much of God’s grace often comes to us in the form of the teaching of the Church, preparing us for living the Christian message, guiding us, giving us God’s Holy Word. Using God’s guidance, we truly get a sense of the right and wrong values in our lives. Does Christ have to weep over us, our families, our communities and our cities because of our weak faith, do we trust Him or reject Him? We need to enter into our inner self and ask Jesus, like his disciples who said: “Increase our faith…” (see Lk 17: 5-6).
