The mustard seed and the yeast are apparently insignificant, small materials. But they become disproportionately large and effective, exemplifying the power of grace in our lives. Similarly, as husbands and wives try to understand and support each other in selfless love through all the daily demands and sacrifices of family and marital life, they reflect the splendor of the Church’s union with Christ that shines forth in them. Today’s Gospel reading, presents us the parable of the mustard seed and the yeast in the Kingdom of God. The mustard seed and yeast are so small in size and yet have such a powerful effect upon the tree and the dough. Both of them work slowly and somewhat miraculously. Little by little the seed and the dough transform their materials. In a special way, women and farmers would tell us how awesome these two examples are. This is the ideal way for the Word of God working in our lives. The Kingdom of God is first and foremost alive in our hearts. The conversion of our hearts will effectively – yet hardly noticeably – take place in a moment. It is gradual but sure, each day and every moment are important. We can all point to powerful moments of conversion. But conversion of heart is more like the mustard seed and yeast making wisdom and grace of God grow in us. It is obvious that the conversion of each one of us usually takes place little by little and step by step. We need only to allow the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives in a continually deepening way, as we grow deeper and deeper in holiness just as the mustard seed and yeast act. Do we see the Holy Spirit working in us little by little? I hope so. Let us be positive and proactive to the grace and Spirit of God working in us. Blessings. Fr. Mussie
